DIY - Hand Sanitizer

As you know, hand sanitizers have increased in popularity recently. They are extremely useful in killing germs on the go. Plus, they can come in small and convenient packages that you can take along with you anywhere. One small pump and voila! You have got germ free hands!  However, with that being said, some hand sanitizers can actually be harsh on the skin. Also, as of right now, many of them are just no longer available in stores. Nonetheless, there are great alternatives that are easily accessible and much more beneficial in terms of skin care. This is why,  we, the Camomile Beauty team, have decided to share with you the perfect recipe to create your own hand sanitizer right at home. A simple, natural and cruelty free homemade version that also works!

Additionally, the greatest part about doing your own homemade hand sanitizer is that it allows you to learn about the ingredients (and their benefits) and alternate for your needs.  A bit of creativity, a bit of mixing here and there, and you will have your own perfect concoction!

So, now let’s start! You will need only 5 ingredients. We will take you step by step and explain their role in the mixture. Here is your list:

Castor oil                   (¼ of a teaspoon)

Tea Tree oil                (30 droplets)

Lavender oil               (5-10 drops)

Aloe Vera juice/gel     (1 ounce)

Rubbing Alcohol        (3 ounces)  or  High Proof Vodka if you can not find any Rubbing Alcohol

Step 1: In a large bowl, add ¼ of a teaspoon of Castor oil.

We are simply adding Castor oil for its known benefit of moisturising skin. In fact, it contains Vitamin E, proteins and Omega 6 & 9 that have been linked to healthy and soft skin. Without mentioning its anti-bacterial properties!

Step 2: Add 30 droplets of Tea Tree oil in the same bowl.

In this step, we are using Tea Tree oil for its amazing germ-fighting properties. This oil contains compounds that have been proven to kill certain bacteria and viruses which is exactly what we want from a hand sanitizer. Please keep in mind that Tea Tree oil is dangerous for pets if they ingest it.

Therefore, if you have animals at home that could lick your hands by any means, please alternate this ingredient. Please refer to the following sites to pick an appropriate anti-bacterial oil as a replacement:

Step 3: Add 5-10 drops Lavender essential oil to your mix.

We have selected Lavender oil simply for its smell. As you know, the odor of Tea Tree oil can be quite powerful, therefore if you would like to make your mixture smell any way, please feel free to use any other oil for a nice fragrance. We do recommend going with an anti-bacterial essential oil such as Lavender essential oil, Grapefruit oil, Ylang Ylang oil, Lemon oil, etc.

(Please still refer to the list provided in the previous step, if you own a pet)

Step 4: Add 3 ounces of Rubbing alcohol (with a concentration not less than 50 percent)

This step is similar to Step 2; it is simply to kill all bacteria, germs and viruses. Rubbing alcohol can potential kill unwanted bacteria that Tea Tree oil couldn’t and this is why we find it important to add. In the case that you cannot find or add Rubbing alcohol, you may use High-proof vodka as a great alternative.

Step 5: Add an ounce of Aloe Vera juice or gel.

Lastly, this step is mostly about texture and your preference. You may use gel if you like a more solid feel and use a pump bottle for your solution. Or, you may continue with the juice if you would like to put your mixture in a spray bottle and use it as so. (That is without mentioning, the amazing properties of Aloe Vera when it comes to hydrating the skin)

There you have it! Your natural, cruelty free hand sanitizer straight from home! Who thought it could be this easy? Killing germs can even be fun!
